Our Mission

Inspired by the many beauties of the Amazon across 9 countries in South America, and in partnership with our colleagues and friends in Brazil and the United States, welcome to Heroes of the Rainforest!

Our primary goal on this platform is to bring more joy to kids and their families around the world, as they learn about this vital part of the planet in a creative, fun, interactive, multilingual, visually beautiful, and safe environment.

To support the “lungs of the earth”, we also aim to fund and plant 1 million native trees in the rainforest, as further described below.

We hope you enjoy the site, and welcome comments on how we can make your experience just a little more awesome.

RIOTERRA

In carrying out actions that contribute to the sustainable development of the Amazon, Rioterra is committed to Biodiversity Conservation, Combating Climate Change, and Reducing Social Vulnerabilities — three strategic axes implemented in an integrated and interdependent manner.

Biodiversity Conservation

Ecosystem restoration is a concrete action capable of recovering biological diversity and environmental services. Rioterra has been working for more than 22 years in the Amazon — home to the world’s largest tropical rainforest and cradle of roughly 15% of all biodiversity on the planet. Despite this richness, approximately 20% of the forest has already been degraded in recent decades.

“The Amazon rainforest has countless ecological functions: regulating air and water quality, humidity and rainfall cycles across the Americas, preserving soils, protecting biodiversity, and combating global warming by sequestering greenhouse gases.”

Climate Emergency

Climate change has been worsening every day, with environmental catastrophes highlighted by the latest Intergovernmental pnel on climate change report. We no longer say only “climate change” but climate emergency. The next 10 years are the last window to avoid catastrophic impacts while keeping global warming below 1.5°C. Rioterra implements reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation+ projects and reforestation strategies to help sequester carbon and keep standing forests intact.

After burning fossil fuels, deforestation and wildfires are among the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions. The Amazon alone accounts for about 14% of carbon assimilated by photosynthesis and stores about 17% of all carbon held in vegetation on Earth.

Reducing Social Vulnerabilities

The main drivers of deforestation are deeply linked to economic and social vulnerability. Without inclusive development models, families are pushed toward forest loss for survival. Rioterra’s work begins by valuing local cultures, supporting family farming, and strengthening extractive communities through fair and lasting forest-based livelihoods.
